Women’s Health

As a secretary for several years at a maternal child health non-profit I collected quite a few women’s health resources especially on pregnancy, and working there has inspired me to start placing some of those resources on this blog.  This list is ongoing as when I come across new resources and have the time to post them I update this page.

Women’s health posts I wrote for this blog:

The following women’s health articles are from a blog visitor at educatorlabs.org:Blue Flowers

The resources below are from Katybeth at selfexam.org

Harassment resources

  • As women there are many tricks we need to be aware of when it comes to sexual harrassment. Unfortunately, some type of harassment is more a matter of when and not if it happens.
  • GHB is a common date rape drug that can be obtained online and is used to drug women’s drinks and then rape them while they are unconscious. It also supposedly can cause a woman to feel very ‘loose’ and almost come on to men before she passes out. They may even tell a woman she is uptight and needs to loosen up before it is slipped in her drink. She will remember very little. Slipping drugs in women’s drinks is very common and happens probably every day.
  • most date rape cases lack sufficient evidence, rape test kits have to be performed almost immediately to pick-up any traces of drugs, some of the drugs are probably untraceable too
    • this is one reason it is recommended not to drink out of a wine glass or any other open glass
      • have an unopened beer can and always cover it when you are not drinking, try to limit it to one drink, if you do not want to drink you can hold the can and barely drink any of it
        • beer has a lower alcohol concentration than wine, making it preferable to drink beer
      • There is a nail polish that when dipped in a drugged drink will change color
      • not going to a bar, especially at night can decrease the odds of this happening, although many people think this is laughable and have gone many times and had no safety issue
      • it is also good not to drink with strangers, drink with people you know
      • do not go to a bar alone, this can make you look like a target and weak and vulnerable, you are easier to ply for drugs, a group is stronger than one person
  • if a woman does not resist violently and have physical evidence of that it is generally not considered rape in court

  • There is an episode of ‘Guilty Rich: While You Were Sleeping’ in which a woman reacted to a date rape drug not even knowing she was raped. She did not know until watching a video of herself years later that her boyfriend or maybe it was her current husband (I can’t remember exactly) had date raped her on one of their first encounters and kept a video of it along with videos of many other unconscious date raped women

  • going about a situation to make it appear consensual in order to use that defense if anything happens
    • people can lie, harass, figure out your hobbies, engage in stalker-like behavior, not listen to or respect anything you say, really beat around the bush and not be straightforward, use their position of power over you, some people will go to the trainings and classes and only become better abusers/harassers, they can really knock you off guard and ask and pester and lie to you when you least expect it and almost corner you in a situation, they may even figure out your name and say hello to you when you are walking to the train (a stranger knowing/guessing your name is probably not an accident), you have to be strong and report everything, at least tell two or three other people. It is bait and switch. If they do knock you off guard by being very forward to a point you don’t expect it (for instance, following you off the train or walking up next to you on a trail or sitting next to you at a cafeteria) and you give-in/it is not clear to you want is going on/you cannot get them away from you/will not respect your disinterest or the lies are very good, again, report it and tell at least two or three other people. Better to deal with it now than later. The more you wait the worse it can get.
    • sometimes can insist on your phone number until they wear you out, giving it out can be like giving out your social security number, it can be a case where it is acceptable to intentionally give a wrong phone number, sure you were lied to and harassed and not listened to and maybe even stalked somewhat etc but now it is considered a consensual date, advances can be very aggressive and sneaky
      • cases where they lie for the reason for your phone number, if it is a co-worker this can be reported, it is unprofessional to be friends with co-workers outside of work and go places together, if a co-worker invites you to their house or a coffee shop etc that should be reported, many work places do not encourage work friendships, office affairs rarely turn into successful relationships
  • try to meet in a public place, do not meet alone in a private room

The Wikipedia page ‘victim blaming’ has some good info such as an ideal victim can be an older woman, alone, and on a bus home for the perpetrator, but a victim that resists and exercises caution as ideal from a judicial perspective and many other various articles. There is also a Wikipedia page on the ‘2012 Delhi gang rape’

  • An assault can happen and often does happen in an unexpected place and by an unexpected person such as an Uber or Lyft taxi driver (as of writing this in December 2017, those companies do not even fingerprint the drivers making it harder to catch drivers guilty of assault), a gang rape can happen at a concert, a single woman in a condo can get rapped by a neighbor, a public transit ride can have sexual harassment while you sitting minding your own business and reading a book – they will come up to you like Carrot-top from the MTV show Jackass and essentially try to solicit sex from you, although, it may be in a slick manner like a pickpocket

      • men that harass have a heavy degree of narcissism and an excessive sense of self-importance, have a desire to want to feel more powerful than women, many people say it is about power and that is generally correct, showing can get away with saying or doing whatever want in some cases
      • teaching daughters to be overly polite may cause them to not feel empowered enough to leave a situation that can turn sexually violent
